back to city life

Hours out of the city, up in Whistler relaxing with my child was exactly the holiday and rest needed for the both of us. We strolled through the Village center and wandered through stores like the Lush, Gap, Cows, Chocolate Houses, Jewlery Cabinets, Art Exhibits and every tourist store we came upon. Ate sushi for lunch and picked up groceries earlier so the condo fridge was stocked with snacks and supplies.

We went to see the new movie March of the Penguins and it was spectacular. Narrated by Morgan Freedman who has the most lovely voice, the movie/documentary was riveting.

I've cut and pasted this from the Official Website:

Each winter, alone in the pitiless ice deserts of Antarctica, deep in the most inhospitable terrain on Earth, a truly remarkable journey takes place as it has done for millennia. Emperor penguins in their thousands abandon the deep blue security of their ocean home and clamber onto the frozen ice to begin their long journey into a region so bleak, so extreme, it supports no other wildlife at this time of year. In single file, the penguins march blinded by blizzards, buffeted by gale force winds. Resolute, indomitable, driven by the overpowering urge to reproduce, to assure the survival of the species.

Guided by instinct, by the otherworldly radiance of the Southern Cross, they head unerringly for their traditional breeding ground where - after a ritual courtship of intricate dances and delicate maneuvering, accompanied by a cacophony of ecstatic song - they will pair off into monogamous couples and mate.... more on the website along with a great trailer

Penguins are monogamous birds, but only for a mating season and so each year when they look for a partner, they look to a new penguin. How cool is it, that once they mate, and the process is complete then the next year when they begin again to look for new companionship and another to have a baby with, they look to and search out a new penguin? What a story the penguins have, one that you should check out for yourself, it's a National Geographic feature film as well.

Last night we sat for over half an hour in an outdoor hot tub and watched the sunset together before retiring to the condo to watch a rental movie and eat Haagen Daaz Mango Sorbet a whole 500ml of it. Then late this afternoon after more time at Blackcomb children's zone, a couple of luge rides and packing up the car we finally headed back down the Sea to Sky highway only to return to Vancouver and our quiet little home life.

But before getting home it would be only fitting that my new tire runs over a nail and gets a flat, my second flat tire in less than a week and no I'm not joking. Off child and I drove to the wheel store to have them repair my tire and remembering me from last week found my demise amusing and quickly fixed our problem.

My daughter is in my bed right now sleeping and tomorrow she leaves to vacation with her father for a period of time. Right now, I'm playing catch up in front of the computer as being away from internet access has put me with a back log in my in box.
